The Divine Story Behind Gangasagar Pilgrimage

📖 According to ancient scriptures, Gangasagar is the holy place where Sage Kapil Muni, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, performed deep penance.

👑 King Sagara’s 60,000 sons, in their quest to find a stolen horse meant for a Yajna (sacrifice), disturbed the meditating Kapil Muni. In his wrath, the sage opened his eyes and turned them to ashes with the fire of his spiritual power.

🕊️ To liberate their souls, King Bhagirath, a descendant of Sagara, performed intense tapasya (penance). As a result, Mother Ganga descended from heaven and touched the ashes of the sons at this very confluence — the Gangasagar — granting them moksha (liberation).

🛕 Today, Kapil Muni Ashram stands at the exact spot where this divine event occurred.

🌊 Gangasnan (Holy Dip)
Taking a dip at the confluence during Makar Sankranti is considered one of the most sacred acts. Pilgrims believe that bathing here:

🔹 Washes away sins
🔹 Frees the soul from the cycle of birth and death
🔹 Connects one with the blessings of Sage Kapil and Mother Ganga

🕯️ Spiritual Essence:
“A bath at Gangasagar is not just a ritual, it is a journey of the soul from ignorance to enlightenment.”
