Yet beneath its spiritual beauty lies a silent struggle.
As an environmentalist walking through the villages and coastlines of Gangasagar, one cannot ignore the changes taking place around us. The sea advances a little further each year. Riverbanks continue to erode. Embankments face constant pressure from tides and storms. Fertile land becomes vulnerable to salinity, and precious green cover gradually disappears. Studies have shown that Sagar Island has lost significant land to coastal erosion over the decades, while rising sea levels and recurring cyclones continue to challenge the fragile ecosystem of this sacred island.
Gangasagar reflects many of the environmental challenges facing the Sundarbans today—soil erosion, disappearing land, embankment breaches, salinity, climate vulnerability, and loss of vegetation. Entire communities in nearby islands have experienced displacement due to erosion and changing coastlines.
